Super-Midsize vs Heavy Jet

Super-midsize covers the whole of the US nonstop. Heavy jets exist for what comes after that: oceans, large groups, and long red-eye legs where the cabin becomes a place to sleep.

Where the classes diverge

A super-midsize jet (about $5,200–$7,600/hr) flies coast-to-coast nonstop and seats eight to ten. A heavy or ultra-long-range jet (about $8,200–$14,500/hr) crosses the Atlantic or Pacific nonstop, seats ten to sixteen, and adds separate cabin zones, often a stateroom and crew rest.

On a domestic transcontinental leg you rarely need the heavy jet: on New York–Los Angeles the super-midsize runs about $40,600–$57,900 against roughly $61,800–$105,500 for a heavy. The heavy's value is range and space you can't get any other way, not the domestic leg itself.

When the heavy jet is the right call

Choose heavy/ultra-long when any of the following is true:

  • The trip crosses an ocean nonstop (transatlantic, transpacific).
  • You're moving ten or more passengers with full baggage.
  • It's a long red-eye and you want a bedroom or a lie-flat crew rest.

The verdict

Stay super-midsize for anything inside North America with a normal-sized party. Step to a heavy jet only when the ocean, the headcount, or the overnight demands it, it's the most expensive class to fly empty of a real reason.

Frequently asked

Do I need a heavy jet to fly to Europe?

For a nonstop transatlantic crossing from the US East Coast, yes, a heavy or ultra-long-range jet. Super-midsize jets don't have the range to cross the Atlantic nonstop with a useful payload.

Is a heavy jet worth it domestically?

Usually not. A super-midsize flies any US coast-to-coast leg nonstop for a lower hourly rate. Reserve the heavy jet for oceans, large groups, or when you specifically want a stateroom.
